Dear friends,
The anticipation is building as we approach the launch of our Book Club, which is set to commence on Wednesday, October 4th, at 7 p.m. CET!
We will start with a discussion to explore the book's essence. We'll also take a few moments to discuss our shared goals, anticipated outcomes, and the overall structure of our meetings.
To get prepared, please read the preface chapter in advance; it's 10 pages long. Additionally, set a personal goal or intention for our study group journey.

By Monday, October 2nd, I will share a meeting agenda and a voice note featuring a passage from the book that may serve as the basis of our conversation here.
About the Book:
Our first read, "The Invention of Women: Making an African Sense of Western Gender Discourse" by Oyeronke Oyewunmi challenges the imposition of Western gender categories in African discourse. The author's unit of analysis is the Oyo Yoruba culture, yet the insights extend to many indigenous African societies.
The book contrasts Western cultural logic, rooted in Biological Determinism, with the Yoruba culture, where the gendered body was not evidence of social hierarchy or a determinant of inclusions or exclusions.
It also examines why and how gender, as we understand it today, was constructed in Yoruba society.
Key questions addressed include the universality of gender categories, the role of gender as a fundamental organizing principle, and the assumption of uniformity in the category of "women." The author delves into whether the subordination of women is truly universal and whether the category of "woman" transcends culture and history.
It is a truly rich book with a blend of history, culture, language, and spirituality.
I hope you will journey along with us starting October 4th. 📆
You can also join the WhatsApp group here, as this is where updates will be posted.
